What Is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of tuftsin (a naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide) developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is registered in Russia and Ukraine as an anxiolytic - a drug that reduces anxiety without the sedation or dependence risks of benzodiazepines. It modulates GABA, serotonin, and dopamine systems and has been studied for generalized anxiety disorder, cognitive enhancement, and immune modulation.
- ▸Anxiolytic activity: Multiple Russian RCTs (n=60–80 per study) showed intranasal Selank (250–500 mcg 2–3×/day) equivalent to fenazepam (a benzodiazepine) for anxiety reduction in GAD patients without sedation or cognitive impairment (PMID: 19718432).
- ▸BDNF upregulation: Selank increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) - proposed mechanism for cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection effects observed in animal models.
- ▸Serotonin/tryptophan: Selank modulates tryptophan metabolism and serotonin turnover - an alternative to monoamine-targeting anxiolytics.
- ▸Immune modulation: Selank increases IL-6 production and regulates T-helper cell balance - the tuftsin backbone provides immunostimulatory properties alongside anxiolytic effects.
- ▸No tolerance or withdrawal: Unlike benzodiazepines, repeated Selank administration in Russian trials showed no tolerance development or withdrawal syndrome on cessation - a key clinical advantage studied.
