What Is DSIP?

DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a nonapeptide (9 amino acids) first isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood in 1977. It was named for its ability to induce delta-wave (slow-wave) sleep - the deepest, most restorative stage of sleep - in rabbits when infused into the brain. Beyond sleep, it modulates cortisol and LH release, reduces stress hormones, and shows neuroprotective effects in animal models.

Research Observations - Not Medical Claims
  • Sleep induction: Original discovery (1977) showed intraventricular DSIP in rabbits induced synchronized delta-wave EEG patterns - sleep stage 3/4 induction (PMID: 904988).
  • Human sleep studies: IV DSIP (25 nmol/kg) improved sleep efficiency and reduced early morning awakening in patients with chronic insomnia in Swiss research (1983–1988).
  • Stress hormone modulation: DSIP reduces ACTH and corticotropin release; studies show attenuated cortisol responses to stress in human subjects after DSIP administration.
  • LH modulation: DSIP influences luteinizing hormone (LH) release - suggesting a role in neuroendocrine regulation beyond sleep.
  • Neuroprotection: Animal studies show DSIP protects against ethanol-induced neurodegeneration and improves cognitive performance in aged rodents.
