What Is Epithalon?
Epithalon (also spelled Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide - four amino acids (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) - derived from the pineal gland extract Epithalamin. It is studied primarily for its reported ability to elongate telomeres and stimulate telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds the protective caps on chromosomes associated with cellular aging. Most research originates from Russian scientists led by Dr. Vladimir Khavinson.
- ▸Telomere elongation in human somatic cells: Epithalon restored telomerase activity and elongated telomeres in human fetal fibroblasts that had reached senescence in vitro (PMID: 12374906; Khavinson et al., 2002).
- ▸Lifespan extension: In Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly), Epithalon extended median lifespan by 11–16% and maximum lifespan by 13% vs. controls (PMID: 12802523).
- ▸Melatonin regulation: Epithalon stimulated melatonin synthesis in elderly subjects in a small Russian clinical study (Anisimov et al., 2001) - one of very few human data points.
- ▸Cancer models: Administration in mice with spontaneous mammary tumors reduced tumor incidence and extended time-to-tumor development.
- ▸Oxidative stress: Reduced lipid peroxidation markers in aging rats; proposed mechanism involves superoxide dismutase upregulation.
- ▸Note: Most research is from a single research group in Russia; independent replication is limited.
